Who We Are and Why We Do This
The Gauteng Association for Homeschooling is a voluntary association dedicated to supporting and advocating for homeschooling families in the Gauteng province of South Africa. As an inclusive and diverse community, our association brings together homeschooling parents, educators, and supporters who share a common goal of providing quality education and fostering the holistic development of children through homeschooling.
Homeschooling, as an alternative educational choice, offers families the flexibility to tailor their children’s learning experiences to their unique needs, interests, and values. We recognize the importance of parental involvement, personalized instruction, and individualized learning approaches that homeschooling provides. Our association aims to promote and protect the rights and freedoms of homeschooling families, while also fostering a sense of belonging and cooperation within the homeschooling community.
The Gauteng Association for Homeschooling serves as a platform for homeschooling families to connect, exchange ideas, and access valuable resources and support. Through our initiatives, we strive to provide homeschooling parents with the necessary tools, information, and networking opportunities to ensure a successful and fulfilling homeschooling journey for their children.
Our association is committed to upholding high educational standards and ensuring that homeschooling in Gauteng aligns with best practices. We collaborate with homeschooling parents, local educational authorities and organizations to stay updated on relevant policies, regulations, and best practices in homeschooling. By maintaining a positive relationship with these stakeholders, we aim to create a harmonious and cooperative environment for homeschooling families.
In addition to providing support and resources, the Gauteng Association for Homeschooling also organizes educational events, workshops, and social activities for homeschooling families to engage with one another, exchange experiences, and foster a sense of community. We believe in the importance of socialization, collaboration, and shared learning opportunities for both students and parents within the homeschooling community.
Our Volunteers
Charlene
Charlene is a child of The Highest, who values family time. She is a committed homeschooling mother to a very bright and fearce young social butterfly and a fearless retired sky diver, who secretely plans to get back into the air, once her daughter is ready to embrace the world on her own.
She is the proud owner of The SA Homeschool Beat, South Africa’s largest online homeschooling magazine and in her free time, she assist, coaches and guides parents on home education, plays musical instruments with her child and sometimes wonders if a mother ever qualifies for recess.
Otherwise, she loves cooking, baking, fire hoolahooping, poi and is busy completing her bachelor’s degree in Holistic Health Sciences with Quantum University, USA. Aside from education, her true passion is healing people and co creating a world that works for everyone, everywhere, and a world that is inheritable to our children.
Karin
Karin loves all things homeschooling and has been assisting many homeschoolers over the past decades.
As a Christian she believes that the Lord provides and protects, and that Jesus Christ is King forever. She and her late husband, Leendert, have been homeschooling since 1992 – her children never went to school, except as teachers themselves!
She has been instrumental in founding homeschooling associations and the Pestalozzi Trust. When not working, she loves to spend time reading, gardening, birding, sewing, knitting, and making and listening to music. However, spending time with her family is top of the list.
Lebohang
I am Lebohang Ngcobo a wife to my wonderful husband and mom of 3 girls.
I have been homeschooling for 11 years and my eldest daughter has completed her matric whilst homeschooling.
I am a born again Christian ,My first and highest call is to be a child of God, then a wife and a mother and a great citizen of my country.
I believe in the organic family unit and my family Homeschooling ethos is based on the scripture in Isaiah 54:13 All your children shall be taught by the Lord, And great shall be the peace of your children.
Uda
Uda is married to her best friend Friedrich and is a stay-at-home-mom of two toddlers. The child of Leendert and Karin van Oostrum, she has been a homeschooling activist basically since birth. She is involved with numerous homeschooling organizations and currently serves on a national task team writing regulations for home education. She taught ballet, music, and self-defence before becoming a mom, and is passionate about homeschooling, law, ethics, biblical counselling, homesteading, and creating family traditions. Her life philosophy can be summed up in the poem by Ethelwyn Wetherald:
“My orders are to fight;
then if I bleed, or fail,
or strongly win, what matters it?
God only doth prevail.
The servant craveth naught
except to serve with might.
I was not told to win or lose –
my orders are to fight.”
Lalie
Lalie Moraba is a homeschooling mama of 2 kids. When she was a frustrated high schooler, Lalie got it into her head that one day when she became a parent, she would homeschool her kids.
Lalie is a firm believer in the education of children being an integral part of family life and parenting, and that children should grow under the close care of their parents for as long as possible. She is also a strong advocate for relaxed, unpressured self-directed learning, where children are not forced to fit into narrow, predetermined standards of academic performance.
Apart from homeschooling, Lalie works as a health coach, to help women transform their health and live anti-fragile, autonomous, empowered, hard-to-kill, resilient lives that are free of modern disease.
She is a kitchen whizkid who’s always testing recipes and learning hacks to simplify meals without compromising health.
Lalie is also a chaser of a sub-4-hour marathon; a minimalist with a clutter-friendly family (send help, please!); and an incurable introvert who enjoys deep meaningful conversations.
As a Christ follower, her faith defines the core of her being, and she is amazed everyday by the goodness and bigness of Yahweh.
Janet
Janet Kieswetter has been happily homeschooling her 5 daughters since 2014. She is the lucky wife of sex therapist Timothy Kieswetter. In their own fields, they serve their community by empowering families to enjoy each other.
Janet has a BPsych degree in Psychology and completed her Post-grad Certificate in Education at the University of Pretoria in 2006. She has a passion for educating her children and actively helps other families to do the same!
